A few remarkable sites to discover on Oléron.
Chassiron lighthouse
Le phare de Chassiron, is located on the very north of the island. You can climb and once at the top, discover the wonderfull rocky foreshore at low tide, its compass garden, the Ile de Ré on the horizon. America is in front of you !
La Cotinière fishing harbour
La Cotinière fishing harbour, 7th french fishing harbour. You can visit the salesroom.
Salterns
Mostly disused now, Oléron has been a great production place for centuries. They covered up to 25 % of the island. Some are productive today, bravely rebuilt by courageous passionates. The Port des Salines can be visited.
Fort Royer
This oyster farm village is a hundred years old. It is a nature reserve and working place at the same time. Guided tours, tastings : you can discover all about oyters, how oysters raising is important for Oléron and understand the daily work of the « sea farmers ».
Cycle tracks
The cycle tracks net is 160 km, through forests, sea side, marshes, vineyards. Oléron is flat so easy to cycle. Many shops rent all types of bikes.
Water sports
Surf, yachting, paddle, kite surf, sailboard, sand-yachting, diving, the ocean is such a playing field. You’ll find a lot of clubs for these activities, for beginners and passionates.
Agriculture
Before sea activities or tourism, Oléron has long lived on agriculture. Vineyards, salt fields, cereal fields, wind mills, tapping of pine trees and then oysters, « exported » productions developed or died all along history. People from Oléron ran a food-producing agriculture.
Nowadays, white and red wines, rosés, Pineau des Charentes, Cognac, distilleries are produced in Oléron. Oysters farms benefit from ideal conditions for quality production, young farmers revive local productions : vegetables, cattle breeding, beebreeding … We’d apreciate helping you meet the ones that provide us with food.
Sightseeing for one day
You can reach L’île d’Aix by boat from Boyardville. A small island to visit by foot or bike, really nice beaches.
La Rochelle, Rochefort, Brouage, Royan are 1h30 maximum from Oléron by car.
